KeyShot Machined Metal
Here's the problem.
Machined metal is a surface finish that shows up constantly in industrial and consumer product design. CNC tool paths leave distinctive circular or linear marks on metal surfaces that catch light in a very specific way — and getting that to look right in a rendering requires a technique that goes beyond KeyShot's standard material library.
This tutorial covers a method that produces results that are genuinely convincing. It takes a bit of work, but the outcome is worth it if machined metal surfaces are something you render regularly.
What This Tutorial Covers
The tutorial is split into two sections.
KeyShot
How to set up and apply a machined metal material in KeyShot using custom textures and the anisotropic material type to replicate the look of CNC tool path marks accurately.
Adobe Illustrator
How to create your own custom machined metal textures from scratch in Illustrator so you can generate exactly the pattern and scale you need for any project.
After completing the tutorial you'll be able to create custom machined metal textures for your own projects and know how to apply them correctly in KeyShot.

I wanted to create a platform that enabled me to teach others the skills and techniques I wish I'd known sooner. I share only the most effective methods to create stunning visuals and how to apply this knowledge in practice through my various courses, tutorials and resources.
My Do-The-Work Guarantee
This is a do-the-work guarantee. Work through the course, apply what you learn, and if you genuinely followed the process and still can't implement what I taught, email me at will@willgibbons.com and I'll refund you.
I stand behind the result, not just the experience. What I can't refund is a course that was purchased but never opened.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Adobe Illustrator?
Only if you want to make the textures yourself. I've included all featured textures for you to use. The texture creation section of this tutorial uses Illustrator.
What version of KeyShot do I need?
KeyShot 9 Pro or newer. This tutorial will not work with non-pro versions or versions older than KeyShot 9.
Do I need prior KeyShot experience?
A basic knowledge of KeyShot is assumed, including materials and texture mapping. If you're new to KeyShot, I'd recommend starting with the KeyShot Rendering Masterclass first.
How long will I have access?
Lifetime access. Once you purchase, the content is yours.
Can I download the video lessons?
Not on the current platform. This will change when the course migrates to Teachable. Lifetime access customers will be notified when that happens.
